8/6 Child Custody Schedules and Visitation Options

An 8/6 custody schedule is a 60/40 parenting time arrangement that gives one parent a total of eight days with the child and the other a total of six days in a repeating two-week schedule.

A parent's days don't have to be in a row. They can be broken up over the two-week period however parents agree.

Common 8/6 schedules

8-6 schedule

Although parents' days don't have to be consecutive, many families choose this option, in which the child spends eight days with one parent and then six days with the other. This is a particularly popular schedule in Wisconsin.

This arrangement gives both parents extended periods of parenting time. The infrequent exchanges are a good option when there's a long commute between parents' homes or when parents want to minimize their in-person interactions.

Every extended weekend

The every extended weekend schedule splits the 8/6 arrangement into four weekdays for one parent and three-day weekends for the other (usually Friday to Monday).

This arrangement works well for parents who want an every weekend schedule that gives more time to the weekend parent.

4-3 schedule

The 4-3 schedule is similar to the every extended weekend schedule, except it doesn't follow a Monday–Friday format. Parents can choose the four-day and three-day time periods that work best for their situation.

This arrangement is a good option when parents don't have Monday–Friday work schedules.

Include age-based schedule changes

As your child grows up, you'll likely need to adapt your custody arrangements for their changing needs and as your family's situation evolves. Transition easily and avoid conflict by including custom provisions for schedule changes in your parenting plan.

For example, when a teenager gets their driver's license and can transport themselves between parents' homes, you might want to add more frequent visits for each parent.

Add holidays, birthdays and special occasions

Most states require a holiday schedule in addition to the regular parenting time schedule. Even if it's not required, your schedule should include specific arrangements for holidays, birthdays and other special occasions your family celebrates.

For shared holidays, parents often alternate on a yearly basis — e.g., one parent might get Thanksgiving in odd-numbered years, while the other gets it in even-numbered years.

Add third-party time

Third-party time is when a child is not with either parent, such as when they're at school or with a babysitter.
