Placement Schedules in Rhode Island (Visitation Schedules)

Placement schedules tell parents when their child should be with them. When choosing a schedule, consider factors like your child's school and extracurricular schedules, your work schedule and the distance between parents' homes.

If parents agree on a schedule, they include it in their parenting plan. Otherwise, the court decides based on proposed schedules submitted by parents and the child's best interests. Submitting a proposed schedule is optional (but recommended) for parents who aren't divorcing.

Shared placement schedules

Shared placement means the child lives with each parent for equal time.

Parents with shared placement might exchange the child every four days.

You can customize this with Custody X Change.

If you have a toddler or a child who's just starting school, four days away might be too long. In this case, parents can exchange the child more often, like every three days.

In these schedules, the exchanges move by one day every week, which can be difficult to keep track of. Use a co-parenting calendar like Custody X Change to get reminders about exchanges and see months, or even years, ahead of time. Your child and co-parent can also access the calendar if you let them.

Primary placement schedules

When one parent has primary placement, the noncustodial parent usually has parenting time every other weekend. They pick up the child on Friday and drop them off on Sunday or Monday morning.

A midweek dinner visit is often included at least every other week. The noncustodial parent picks up the child from school, then drops them off before bedtime.

School breaks and holidays

Include how you'll split school breaks and holidays in your schedule.

Rhode Island children typically have 10 weeks of summer break. Parents may choose to continue to follow their regular schedule during the break, or split the time however they'd like.

During summer, it's common for each parent to get up to two weeks of vacation time with the children. They must give 30 days' notice of where they are going.

Holidays are often split evenly, meaning the child spends a half day with each parent. Monday holidays give the child a three-day weekend that you can split in half.

If this arrangement won't work, you can alternate holidays yearly. For example, if one parent gets Christmas this year, the other parent gets Christmas next year.
